Heger drawings, 1857-1860.

Twenty-five pencil drawings of scenes in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah drawn by Joseph Heger while he served in the army from 1857 to 1860. Include are views of a Rio Mimbres copper mining camp, the Gila River, Taos Pueblo, Canyon de Chelly, Fort Union and Fort Defiance. Also present is a drawing of the Battle of the Gila, 1857, during the Apache campaign.

Artist and soldier; born in Germany in 1835, Joseph Heger came to the U.S. with his parents. He served as a private in Company K of the First Regiment of Mounted Riflemen along with John Van Deusen Du Bois. Their campaigns against the Indians included the Gila-Apache campaign of 1857, the Utah war of 1858, and the Navajo campaign of 1859. From the description of Heger drawings, 1857-1860.
